Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, has taken over the investigation to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including police response and the sequence of events leading up to the fatalities.

Chico, California: Active Shooter Reports at Library; Two Dead

Separately, authorities in Chico, California are responding to reports of an active shooter situation at the Chico Library, where two people have been confirmed dead according to early official information.

Police were dispatched to the area following emergency calls reporting gunfire near or inside the library. A shelter-in-place advisory has been issued for residents and businesses in the vicinity of East 1st Avenue and Sherman Avenue, with officials urging the public to avoid the area while the scene remains active.

Montreal, Quebec — Monday — Authorities in Montreal are investigating a fatal shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges area that left three people dead, including a police officer, a civilian, and the suspected gunman. Another police officer was injured during the incident.

Police say officers were first called to the area near the intersection of Trans-Island Avenue and de Courtrai Avenue shortly before the situation escalated. The incident is believed to have taken place near Westbury Avenue, close to a supermarket, with reports indicating the Supermarché PA and surrounding residential buildings were affected, including bullet damage to nearby condominium windows.

The suspect, identified as Seth Hatfield in early police reporting, was originally from Lethbridge. Authorities have not yet released full official confirmation of the suspect’s background or motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

According to Montreal police, an “armed and dangerous suspect” alert was issued for the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood as officers worked to secure the area and locate all individuals potentially involved. Residents were instructed to shelter indoors while the situation developed.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., officials lifted the “armed threat” alert, stating that the immediate danger to the public had passed.

Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher later confirmed that investigators currently believe only one suspect was involved. Earlier uncertainty about a possible second suspect led officers to expand the perimeter and secure multiple potential crime scenes.

“We preferred to enlarge all of the crime scenes to be sure that we had the situation completely controlled,” Dagher said during a press briefing. “The threat is controlled and safe. So the community is safe.”

Videos circulating on social media appear to show the suspected shooter dressed in military-style clothing carrying a long gun, though authorities have not independently verified all footage.

Quebec Premier François Legault condemned the violence, stating that such actions are unacceptable and have no place in society. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante also expressed condolences and praised the rapid response and bravery of responding police officers.

As of now, investigators are continuing to piece together the sequence of events, including how the suspect obtained the weapon and what led to the shooting. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
